|
| | | Battle Heater | | | | Where to begin? Well, the heart of the story centres around Furuchi who has acquired an electric room heater (known as a Kotatsu), but this is no ordinary room heater; this one possesses a malignant spirit that thrives on the blood of human beings. This is not all there is to the film though, as it also chronicles the lives of the apartment where Furuchi lives – and what an array of eccentric characters they are too! There is the old man who keeps having long lapses of silences whilst in mid-conversation; the cyberpunk-style kids who play in a rock band; the cheating wife who has carved her husband in half, and keeps the upper half standing upright in a bowl - and not forgetting Furuchi’s boss who habitually administers Furuchi with electric shocks for no apparent reason whatsoever. As you can see, the film is populated with a variety of colourful characters, which keep things interesting. However, there were several moments throughout the film that left me scratching my head in bemused puzzlement, but it’s these absurdities that make me go back for more, where Asian cinema is concerned. Then again, I’ve always been a strange chap…
Despite the central concept, the film is not a bloodbath; it plays rather like an eccentric black comedy. It had me laughing in several places (and yes, it was intentional humour on the part of the filmmakers) – and there’s not much that has me laughing, so the film scores points for that alone.
It wouldn’t really be fair of me to give too much of the story away, as this would spoil the fun for potential viewers. All I can really do is recommend that you see this for yourself, as whatever I write will come nowhere near to being able to properly convey how demented this flick is. George Lida actually manages to take this rather silly idea and turn it into something very watchable and surprisingly entertaining. He ably manages to take all the various strands of the story and weave it into a cohesive whole, which is quite impressive considering how much is going on throughout the film. It’s great fun and highly recommended – though it may well be a little too bizarre and leftfield for some viewer’s tastes. I enjoyed it immensely though, if that’s any recommendation.

| | | Down To Earth | | | | Plot Summary
It seems everyone is trying to get into heaven; at least those whose time is up. For Lance Barton, a struggling comedian and bicycle messenger, it's the last thing on his mind. His due date upstairs is 50 years away. In the meantime, he's got big dreams to pursue on Earth, such as landing a slot at the final Amateur Night Contest at the famed Apollo Theatre. Lance's has one little problem though - he ain't that funny. Thanks to an over-cautious emissary from heaven, Mr. Keyes (Eugene Levy), he's going to get hit (literally) with a much bigger problem. Showing that even God has difficulty finding good help these days, the inept minion mistakenly plucks Lance from a traffic accident - before it takes place. Transporting him to the Pearly Gates, or more accurately, the velvet roped-lines of the hottest club around, the error is finally addressed by Mr. King (Chazz Palminteri), the streetwise, no-nonsense head angel who manages the place from his plush windowed office. Since returning to his own body on Earth is impossible, the urban dwelling Lance reluctantly agrees to a normally unthinkable proposal. He'll occupy the body of a wealthy old white mogul, Charles Wellington, until a more suitable body can be found. Strangely enough, in a Park Avenue penthouse, servants and butlers become his new homeys as Lance works on his streetwise comedy routine for the big Apollo showdown. Living in the body of a callous old white man would be bizarre enough for Lance without falling in love with Sontee (Regina King), the beautiful woman publicly battling Wellington's company at the same time. And if that wasn't enough, he's got to deal with the love affair between Wellington's wife (Jennifer Coolidge) and his personal assistant (Greg Germann), and their plot to have him killed. Can reincarnation lead to self discovery, true love and a better stand up routine? Lance Barton is about to find out.

Eventually, Rod McCain's son Vince, along with the up-and-coming business executive Willa Weston, take control of the zoo and revoke the Fierce Creatures Policy. Vince instead comes up with many under-handed and vicious schemes to attract customers-unauthorized celebrity endorsements, shoddy, overpriced zoo merchandise, and using robotic animals instead of real ones. However, Vince is also stealing from the zoo's funds, and when his father finds out, he rears to turn the zoo into a Japanese-owned golf course. Meanwhile, Willa has grown to love the zoo and its animals, and, along with her newly-reformed love interest Rollo, plot with the zookeepers to save the zoo from the McCains |

| | | Happiness | | | | Plot Summary
When a young woman (Jane Adams) rejects her current overweight suitor (Jon Lovitz) in a restaurant, he unexpectedly places a curse on her. The film then moves on to her sisters. One (Cynthia Stevenson) is a happily married woman with a psychiatrist husband (Dylan Baker) and three kids. Unfortunately the husband develops an unnatural fascination for his 11 year old son's male classmates, fantasizes about mass killing in a park, and masturbates to teen magazines. One of his patients (Philip Seymour Hoffman) has an unrequited fascination for the third sister (Lara Flynn Boyle). Meanwhile the apparently stable 40 year marriage of the sister's parents (Ben Gazzara, Louise Lasser) suddenly unravels when he decides he has had enough and wants to live a hermit's life in Florida. Obviously, the whole movie is slightly warped in its viewpoint and certainly presents abnormal relationships among all of its parties.Todd Solondz |

| | | Monty Python And The Holy Grail | | | | Plot Summary
The movie starts out with Arthur, King of the Britons, looking for knights to sit with him at Camelot. He finds many knights including Sir Galahad the pure, Sir Lancelot the brave, the quiet Sir Bedevere, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir Lancelot. They do not travel on horses, but pretend they do and have their servants bang coconuts to make the sound of horse's hooves. Through satire of certain events in history (witch trials, the black plague) they find Camelot, but after literally a quick song and dance they decide that they do not want to go there. While walking away, God (who seems to be grumpy) come to them from a cloud and tells them to find the Holy Grail. They agree and begin their search. While they search for the Grail, scenes of the knight's tales appear and why they have the name they have. Throughout their search they meet interesting people and knights along the way. Most of the characters die; some through a killer rabbit (which they defeat with the holy hand grenade), others from not answering a question right from the bridge of Death, or die some other ridiculous way. In the end, King Arthur and Sir Bedevere are left and find the Castle Arrrghhh where the Holy Grail is. They are met by some French soldiers who taunted them earlier in the film, so they were not able to get into the castle.

| | | Sin Ton Ni Sonia | | | | Idiotic Mexican comedy about a philandering, non-committal Spanish-language TV dubber and his holistic nutty girlfriend (she worries about the race of man being non-biodegradable), and continued examples of why their relationship does not work.
(The only scenes that have any intentional humor that occasionally slip through are in the dubbing room, but that’s such an easy target to make fun of, the real dubbers usually do it themselves.) Somewhere in between their failed romance, they each have a rebound, with baggage of their own, and there’s a cop subplot that involves an organ-thieving nun named Mama Rosa. In addition to being so poorly scripted, acted, directed (the first and last-mentioned by Carlos Sama), the abstinence of laughs easily results in shoddy work all around, connecting no rhythm between any of the characters in any of the various plotlines. Its attitude of tongue-in-cheek translates to lengüeta-en-culo. With Juan Manuel Bernal, Mariana Gajá, Cecilia Suárez, and Tara Parra. |
